Lecture 41: 4G Wireless Communications

Synopsis:

In this talk we will present the trends that are dominating the telecommunication industry. Exchanging information is the hear of all advances human kind have made in late 20th and early 21st century. People are thirsty for accessing more and more data and information. Numerous applications are developed to share data, games, etc. Millions are people are communicating with each other and exchanging files, video, voice, data, etc. with each other. What is the infrastructure that handle this massive amount of data? This presentation focuses on the infrastructure of wireless communication systems, especially 4G systems, their business motivations and requirements, their challenges and their advances. Finally, we will briefly describe a couple of internationally admitted standards for 4G wireless systems.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Masoud Olfat received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 1993, and the M.S. and phD degrees both in electrical engineering form University of Maryland, College Park in 1998 and 2003, respectively, and continued Post-doctoral at the same University as well. From October 1995 to August 2002, he has worked at several academic and industrial positions. He joined Nextel Communications in 2003, and ever since he has been actively participating in the development of IEEE802.16 standard and mobile WiMAX working groups. He was a manager of 4G Access in Sprint Nextel (XOHM), primarily responsible for XOHM WiMAX iIOT, technical development of WiMAX certification, standard support, and defining requirements for WiMAX enhancement, which was merged with Clearwire, and he became responsible for standard technical activities. In September 2011, he joint Lightsquared Inc. as the director of RAN technology and standards, primarily responsible for the development and implementation of 3G LTE technology and networks. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland at College Park. He has designed, planned, managed and executed the WiMAX iIOT program, which has helped resolving numerous technical issues in WiMAX equipments. His research interests include WiMAX, 3GLTE, and UMB MAC and PHY topics.
